Jake Aaron Villarreal: I'm Jake Aaron Villarreal, born and raised in Silicon Valley and here to take you behind the scenes to share what it's like to be a startup founder, the journey they're on, the problems they face, the products they build in an effort to make our lives better. I'm excited to have with us today Madison Feehan, founder and CEO of Space Copy. Madison, welcome to the show.
Madison Feehan: Thanks, Jake. Great to be here.
Jake Aaron Villarreal: Well, I'm happy you're here. I know it's been a while since our last conversation. Before we jump in, where are you joining us from today, Madison?
Madison Feehan: I'm joining from Vancouver, Canada, which is my second home.
Jake Aaron Villarreal: Wow, I love Canada. Um, where's the other home? Just curious.
Madison Feehan: We're mainly based out of San Diego. So, it is essentially one paradise from the West Coast to the other.
Jake Aaron Villarreal: Well, I went to school in San Diego, so I know that town very well. And uh, I go back and forth between Silicon Valley and Laguna Beach. So as we speak, I'm really an hour from where you're at. If you're in San Diego, if you are not, what you just said, you're up in North Canada. You know, it's just the West Coast is a great place to be. We uh, we love the variety of what we can do here and continues to amaze me of how many people come and go.
So before we jump in and talk about Madison's company, Space Copy, let me give a little background of Madison. She began working with NASA-related initiatives early on at 16 years old and has since built a career at the intersection of space technology, entrepreneurship, and lunar resource utilization. Today, she's leading efforts to transform how humanity builds, manufactures, and lives beyond Earth through the emerging lunar economy. Madison's background is based in commerce, and she holds Harvard Business School certification entrepreneurship and innovation in conjunction with ongoing studies in international business.
So what is Space Copy? Space Copy eliminates the challenge of remote environment manufacturing by building rapidly deployable 3D printers that convert local materials like soil, sand, and scrap metal and convert it into usable infrastructure such as housing, roadways, and maintenance tools up to 20% faster and 70% cheaper than standard logistics.
So can't wait to get into this. Madison, as you began your early career, talk a little bit about what shaped you into getting into technology and really landing where you're at today and building your own company.
Madison Feehan: You know, I get that question quite a bit and I don't even know if there's one specific thing. I think I, I talk very frequently about um, a desire to want to work in space, an interest in the sector, a supportive family, and really getting to hone that talent by having the opportunities that I did, getting to work for NASA. I mean, it's not your everyday thing. I'd say it's a conjunction of all those different factors fastened together in some strange butterfly effect that allowed them to cavalcade one after the next that brought me here.
Jake Aaron Villarreal: Yeah. Well, it's an area that a lot of us are interested in now as we're hearing more about, you know, SpaceX and about, you know, building on different worlds. If you think about it, when you first imagined Space Copy, what problem did you feel most compelled to try and solve?
Madison Feehan: Yeah. And it's, it's so relevant of us to be talking about SpaceX at the IPO coming up. Where we're, where we kind of started versus where we're at now is a really, really different outlook. I started Space Copy because I wanted to put 3D printers in the moon. Purely that drive and that motivation, which sounds crazy to the everyday techpreneur or everyday person. Noticing that there was going to be a lunar economy, that we were going to send astronauts up to space, and that it was going to be for long-duration missions, not just to the International Space Station for little test projects, but for longer term to study human health, behavior, and psychology, to the actual geophysics and material science behind what's going on in space and so forth, and realizing the fact that the cost of actually doing and executing those missions was going to be so substantial. Somewhere along those lines is where we came up with the birth of the concept for Space Copy which had originally started as an idea back in 2017 and then got revitalized back in 2022 when we got started. So it, it started there and it really has evolved into something that is quite magnanimous.
Jake Aaron Villarreal: Yeah. Well, for the listeners who may not live in the world of hard tech or space innovation, how would you explain what Space Copy does in simple terms?
Madison Feehan: We build 3D printers that take scrap materials and turn it into infrastructure in the most extreme environments of Earth and space. When you're dealing with a natural disaster like a wildfire or a flood, you're in a remote community, you're in an area that's been affected by war or combat or you're in space, any of these really pretty drastic environments, climatic extremes, you don't have access to supply chains, right? It, it takes a lot of effort to get any kind of logistics in from point A to point B. And what we've developed is this portable, rapidly deployable 3D printing system that gets dropped right at the site and uses whatever material it has around it to build infrastructure. Everything from vehicle repair parts to roadways to housing using quite literally soil, sand, landfill waste, things that would not be really thought of for manufacturing capacity. And the goal there is sustainability, circularity, cost savings, and human safety in extreme conditions.
Jake Aaron Villarreal: Wow. I mean, I'm just thinking of like the LA fires and just places where, you know, there's catastrophes there or disasters that just it's hard to get products and manufacturing or anything done in areas like that. That to me seems like a use case that you know the common person could get behind for you. Talk about some other meaningful use cases that either you're now working on or working in or just you've focused the company around if you haven't already mentioned.
Madison Feehan: Yeah, I, I always tell people that it's a space company, hence the name Space Copy. But we also work in defense, we work in natural disaster remediation, we work in mining, and we work in remote construction. Though those seem like extremely different industries, they have a lot of parallels and a lot of moving factors that relate similarly to each other. And really, it comes back to logistics and supply chain management and not being able to have accessibility to critical infrastructure.
So about a year into the company, we realized that as much as we love space, it can't be the only thing that we do. You know, revenue-generated company and such, we need to be able to pivot into something that brings us early revenue, has a pretty decent ROI for investors and so forth. So we started looking into dual-use applications in defense technology and working in war zones. And through that, somebody said, "Hey, you know, this could be used in a remote construction site." And somebody at a remote construction site said this could be used in a natural disaster, and somebody in a natural disaster said this could be used in mining, and we started to build out those use cases and it's, it's really been a labor of love trying to go out to those customers and understand you know what exactly do they want, what do they need?
And the answers came in really strange places. We have people in the Arctic that say that they need door hinges and we've got people in a mining site down in Ontario, Canada that's saying, um, you know, we suffered disasters in the last several years that all could have been prevented if we had the right tool and the right beam and the right pipe in this, in this place and at this time. And it's, it's that conjunction of things that led us to kind of diversifying into all those markets. But regardless, I always think of it as critical infrastructure in extreme climates.
Jake Aaron Villarreal: What's been the biggest surprise for you in building this so far? I mean, it's you're in a lot of different areas, you know, you have a team that you've had for a while and you're, you know, continuing to build and find the right people, but as you continue to build this organization, what's for you been something that was eye-opening or just something you didn't expect so far?
Madison Feehan: Many, many things. [laughter] My job description is I put 3D printers on the moon and, and other places, but that comes with a territory. Nobody's done it before, so there's a whole host of problems to be had. People have put 3D printers into zero gravity before, but they've never put it on the moon. They've not put it in a lot of the extreme climates that we work in. So, a lot of it comes down to the material science aspect. How do we work with this material, a metal, a ceramic, a polymer, and trying to understand how those blend together, which they don't really. So, trying to work with all of that from the tech perspective has definitely been one of the hardest parts. And then relaying that into the environment that we're working in. The temperature extremes, lack of gravity in some cases, um, radiation exposure and how does that affect the machinery. And then there's really just the culture aspect. And something that really positively surprised me is how open and interested people are and when they hear about this concept, it kind of sounds like science fiction. But as they start to understand more, we've had so many people want to come work with us, partner with us, and just learn more and follow along. And I'm extremely proud of that.
Jake Aaron Villarreal: Yeah. When you think of 3D, 3D printing, you know, if you don't know the technology, well, you think of, I don't know, maybe an experiment you want to run at your house or you want to bring your kids in and you want to build some toys. And what's, I'm assuming that the caliber that you have is very different than that, but how big are these 3D printers? Like, how are they built differently than something that you could just build online or find on?
Madison Feehan: You know, the, the funny part is that you can buy large format 3D printers online that can build you a house. It, it is a thing. It's a highly specialized thing, but it is a thing. And I recently sat down with an interview that was called Beyond the Keychain because every time somebody thinks of 3D printing, they're corroborating that with a hobby piece or something for their household, a knickknack, maybe fixing a part on your blender that broke and you want to 3D print the replacement part instead of going to the store and buying a new one. The principles and the way that the technology works are identical. The application is not. So take your Prusa or your Bambu Lab printer and multiply that by 10x when it comes to capabilities and material flexibility.
Our printers come in two different sizes. We have our desktop models which are about the size of a laptop or what you would find if you were doing hobby printing, but it comes with a lot of automation, materials processing capabilities for over 60 different materials and functionality in over a dozen different climates, and that's not what you would get in a hobby printer. And then for our standardized systems, Aerys, the name of our product that's actually launching um, in a few weeks, is a cubic meter in build volume. So you can build some pretty decently sized stuff. And a lot of the stuff that we print is interlocking kind of like Lego brick, Lego pieces so that you can build up larger structures starting from a meter and then going larger and larger until you get to a roadway, a rocket launchpad, or a house.
Jake Aaron Villarreal: Wow. Stop there. Walk through that a little bit more. So you have the system that works. You put in raw materials. It takes a moment for it to process, I'm assuming. And then the finished product. How long does that take? Does it depend on what the material is? Does it depend on what you're building? Kind of walk through what that's like.
Madison Feehan: It's absolutely case dependent. So depends what material, depends what you're trying to build, how big, how long, etc. You can run through. I think the shortest cycle time is about 108 minutes from inserting the raw material to the robotic arm actually delivering the finished part into the collection bin for you to pick up and use. Um, but the way that this works is you take a material of any different kind. We're working with some really crazy things that definitely should not go inside 3D printers. But take soil for example mixed with scrap plastic. We've got shredding and mixing systems that are breaking it down. Uh, we've got sensors and camera systems that are identifying chemical constituency and particle size distribution, seeing, hey, is this uniform? Is it sharp and abrasive? Do we need to grind down more?
Once we get to a certain level of understanding, that gets fed into a filament maker and then we're able to extrude out almost like icing a cake, this wire-based filament created from whatever scrap materials you've picked up. And then we build it into various different geometries. And some of it's as simple as a block. And some of it is more complex like O-rings and fasteners and things that you would use to install drones and put together robots. We've got about 250 items that we can 3D print and we're constantly expanding. But yeah, you kind of take that and imagine the potential of it and then on top of that imagine that potential as something that has, you know, military standard specifications, something that could be used in the aerospace and defense industries that can go to the front lines. So, it's ingenuity and it's creativity and imagination, but at the same time, it's also high fidelity that you really don't see in a lot of common um, forward deployable machinery. Something that you would find in a lab but built rugged enough to go out into extreme climate.
Jake Aaron Villarreal: Yeah, it's amazing. You know, as you look at your business and you look at the model you have, you talked about having to get into different industries. Talk a little bit about the model. Is it you build it once and sell it? Is there like a licensing fee? Is there applications you subscribe to? Like what's the, what's the model as you look forward with Space Copy?
Madison Feehan: There's multiple structures and it is highly dependent on what the client wants and the size of the client. We sell both B2B and B2G. So government versus commercial industry are two very wildly different beasts. Speaking just about commercial, we do hardware sales. Both our desktop and our standard units. We're currently allowing users to pre-order if it's something that they're interested in. If you're, if you're in composites manufacturing or avionics or aerospace defense or mining, etc. you, you work with a lot of strange things and you want to play around with stuff without buying some big expensive injection molding or sintering system or 20 different kinds of different 3D printers. You just want an all-in-one. That's where a lot of the use case comes from.
We also do 3D as a service or 3DaaS where users can come in, give us their materials and we will do a test and do some test servicing and we have that subscription model up to 100K in usage and materials per month. And then beyond that, we've had a lot of interest from people that just want the material processing system or just want the post-processing and autonomous robotic system. So right now we're looking at plug-and-play solutions to be able to provide different parts of our product to end users who just want one piece of the pie.
Jake Aaron Villarreal: I like that you have different options to generate revenue at the same time. You know, you look at your product, you have, you know, parts that you have to put together and manufacture. Yeah. Which is you know hard tech is different than software where you have different technologies, cost structures in place, some things are more risky than others. When you look at your business and you look at the moat or potential moat that you have, define that a little bit if you have one, or and maybe you don't have one but just want to get your thoughts there. We hear this a lot and in like pure play software we're kind of seeing that go away a little bit with AI where you know the moat you thought you had you really don't have anymore or you might not. But hardware and software combination is a little different. So what, what are your thoughts there?
Madison Feehan: Yeah, we've got moats, we've got rivers with drawbridges. Yeah, it's really true. As hard tech, you really have to define that out and have that specific use case, that market, that user in order to get you from point A to point B. It's not SaaS. How I would contextualize that, let's just go with expeditionary manufacturing as an industry because I feel that that encapsulates aerospace, defense, mining, and remote construction, our four primary markets. So expeditionary manufacturing or trying to supply logistics to the front lines of any environment. In the United States alone, $79 billion a year is being spent on that effort. And that's coming a lot from government, but also from industry players in construction, in mining, in defense, the OEMs, the providers.
And here's the dual-use problem behind that. First and foremost, that is an expansive cost. It is around $10,000 per kilogram. When you're sending any kind of supplies into a remote environment and you need thousands of pounds of equipment to keep people alive in remote communities, you can translate that same number to space. Right now, to send from Earth to the surface of the moon is 1.2 million US per kilo and it takes 23,000 kg to keep four people alive for a year. So that's already a 6 billion number just to keep four people alive in space.
Jake Aaron Villarreal: Wow.
Madison Feehan: And, and 79 billion a year in terrestrial-focused expeditionary manufacturing. Like these are big numbers that we're talking about playing with and you led with it kind of in the introduction here: 70% cheaper and 20% faster by using Space Copy's 3D print systems out of a $79 billion market where it costs $6 billion to keep four people alive in space for a year. If you're talking about shaving off 70% of that cost, there's the moat. It, it is right there.
And, and the other half of that is really human safety, too, because, you know, we can spend all the money in the world and governments can increase taxes and send out more supplies to those in need. Not that anybody really wants that, but it can be done. But what happens if it doesn't get there in time? What happens if that truck can't make it over the ice bridge or that plane can't make a safe landing? It's going to take not just hours, but days, weeks, months to receive that critical equipment. And it could be the part on a food truck that's sending in food and supplies and water to people in a remote community. If they don't get that supplies, they could die. And, and that's the other factor is, you know, above that incredible cost savings is human safety. And being able to provide a solution to that is not only meaningful, but it is extremely important. And that is in its own a separate moat.
Jake Aaron Villarreal: Yeah. Well, you talked about a couple things that are really interesting. The moats and multiple moats that you have, but also the meaningfulness behind it. I mean, you're, you're really talking about saving lives in the right scenario where your technology can help avoid that uh, disaster of people dying, and depends on what their environment is or where they're at. As a solo founder, you had this idea. You started to build what you have today. You've worked at NASA at a young age. You obviously are very intelligent. You got great experience with accelerators. For you, what's been some of the moments that have been most meaningful for you in this journey so far?
Madison Feehan: Gosh, picking highlights is really, really [laughter] hard. I have such an incredible support community as well, and it is hard as a solo founder, as an early career professional, as a female in hard tech. There's a lot of barriers that get put up, but I'm, I'm inspired by the people that break them down every single day, and I'm deeply honored to be part of that community. But thinking about kind of the biggest wins, many, many, many, but a handful that come to mind. Um, we've gotten to pitch on some of the world's greatest stages. We were at Harvard, MIT, Yale, like all over the place, getting to showcase our technology amongst the biggest and brightest in academia and tech. We got brought down to Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab. We've been in countries all around the world trying to spread our knowledge about what we're doing, shaking hands with, you know, space administrators for the European Space Agency, Canadian Space Agency, NASA, and so forth. And it's one thing when you are an early career professional sitting on a panel with a bunch of people, 30 years your senior, trying to figure out what program gets funded at NASA. That's cool.
Jake Aaron Villarreal: Wow.
Madison Feehan: But the other side of that is then starting a company and then being on the other side of that table sitting across from those people saying, "This is why you should believe in me and here's how we're going to prove it." And the first time that we took simulated lunar soil, or regolith, and we mixed it with recycled food packets from astronauts in the International Space Station and we made interlocking Lego bricks with our logo on it and brought it to NASA folks and they held it up proudly and said, "We want this." I can't think of any other thing in the world that would make me so proud as to relive that moment again and again.
Jake Aaron Villarreal: Yeah. Well, that's amazing. That's really, really cool. You know, you're in this position of innovation. At the same time, the world seems to be transforming, and you know, AI is really it, and every company we're talking to, it's part of their infrastructure today or becoming part of it. How, how important, or is AI part of your systems? Maybe it is and maybe it's not. Just want to ask the question.
Madison Feehan: It's absolutely important to our systems, not just in the actual technology itself, but in the way that our team runs the business day-to-day. So, first and foremost, what we're building, the end goal here is an entirely autonomous printing platform. So that all you have to do is hit a button and the system takes care of the rest. And when your end goal is to operate on the moon, yeah, you, you can't really have too much human interference. So robotics, AI, autonomous systems, algorithms that are determining the chemical constituency of this product and how it feeds into this 3D printer and connected to this sensor and so forth. That's a huge component and we're still in the process of trying to figure out what the best solution is in some use cases, but we've been making some really great strides in our product.
The other side of that is what it actually takes to run a business day-to-day with a small team. The use of products like Claude and some of the others like ChatGPT will always be a classic, being able to use those, build out executive assistants through Claude code, and have them feed back into your emails and your workflow and your Google Drive system and figure out what do you need to get done, build this one-pager, edit this pitch deck around this specific audience. That in itself saves hours upon hours that we can rededicate into product development and day-to-day management.
And I'll close that thought with something that is really niche to the tech industry, which is government funding and grant writing. When you're trying to kind of get off the ground with some of the earlier-stage technologies, like, we have a whole suite of other things that are under wraps right now. One that I can loosely talk about would be mixing lunar soil with wool to weave a textile that repels radiation in astronaut spacesuits. Like, that's crazy. And you need government funding to get those early projects off the ground. And we've been building out grant writing agents through AI to get us 75% of the way. Give us a template, we insert the technical bits and get that sent off, which is taking things down from an eight-person project over three weeks to a two-person project in three days.
Jake Aaron Villarreal: Wow, that's amazing. You know, we look at AI as really a function of saving time in any operation. And it sounds like you're kind of tapping into that in a big way. Every company we're working with today, we help them find people and we do the recruiting. And you know, our business, if you think about it, you know, a lot of it can be automated and we're building that as well. So, you know, from outreach to messaging to engagement, you know, you think of interviewing even, you know, whether it's voice AI or video AI, and not everyone's going to want to do that, but, you know, I think you have to think differently in this world and be able to bring different value to the table.
Fundraising is an area that every company seems to be doing. It doesn't matter what your brand is, how big or small you are. Companies are going public to raise capital. Other ones, the big brands are, you know, raising hundreds of millions every day. What have you learned about fundraising in hard tech, especially when you're building something as ambitious as what you're building?
Madison Feehan: Well, to kind of put it as a play on words, it's hard in tech. [laughter] The attitude has changed significantly. In 2021, you could write it on a napkin and get a million dollars. In 2023, when Silicon Valley Bank crashed, nobody was writing checks. And then with the presidencies and the geopolitical issues, especially in the United States, kind of causing a ripple effect in the venture capital world, nobody really knows what's going on post-COVID, right? So there's been so much instability, and that instability has created doubt and another layer that I feel like founders have to pass through when it comes to investor diligence and being ready for that intake of capital. Not just having the right team and the right product anymore, but really going out and validating it.
I can say especially to hard tech, it's become more of a thing to try and bootstrap as much as possible to get an MVP or get a prototype out to users to validate that this works and that people will buy it or people will rent it or service it or however before an investor will come onto the cap table, which is definitely a different attitude than I think a lot of firms are when they're looking at raising capital. It's not the same as, you know, food and beverage or even health tech or climate tech or fintech. Everybody's got their own problem to get an investor onboarded, if you can call it that. But hard tech especially is its own beast when it comes to, you know, what do you need to do to get over that finish line. I'd like to try and maintain some positivity. I think that in 2026, we're stabling out a little bit and it's giving more potential for new and emerging startups in various different subdisciplines inside hard tech to have a voice. But it's an uphill battle and one that we, amongst so many other founders that I know, fight every single day.
Jake Aaron Villarreal: Yeah. Yeah. There's, there's opportunities, challenges, and a lot of learning that happens. But I, I love the space you're in because it seems to be hitting at the right time with like we talked about earlier with SpaceX and so many other organizations that are building data centers now and thinking about data centers in, you know, in space and the reality of what that looks like. And it seems to be more realistic now than it did even a couple months ago. As you think of your company, do you see that as an opportunity to collaborate, connect with, and potentially be building data centers as well?
Madison Feehan: I, I actually really love the concept of data centers in space. So, um, I was watching the Artemis 3 crew selection this morning online and trying to understand kind of what the next generation of space looks like. NASA sets a lot of the precedents and a lot of things tend to follow after that. But kind of thinking out loud, I think that data centers are a great example of kind of where partnerships build upwards. And I've seen different facets of it come from other areas in the space tech industry. I was down at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory a couple months back and they were talking about this new wave of data centers and I was like, "Why is that important? Like why is that necessary right now? Surely there's other things in space that we could be investing in."
And they, they gave us the explanation of, "We're going to send things outside of Earth's orbit to the moon, to Mars, whatever. Where is that data going? Like you're, you need to read data coming back from those missions. How are you going to get that data?" Because a satellite's not going to be able to pick it up en masse. You're only going to be able to capture a few images or maybe a couple videos a day. The Curiosity rover at Mars had maybe 10% of its relay signal actually coming back to Earth because 90% of it was stored in a backlog because there wasn't enough data transmission capabilities in space. And that is one of many examples of why I think that's an important topic. So, I'm glad you honed in on that. But generalizing that, especially at Space Copy, we build partnerships all over the place. We've got about 25 of them right now and looking to expand that further so that we can dig into certain niches like repairing antennas on satellites and going forward to create missions on the moon.
Jake Aaron Villarreal: Yeah. Looking out 12, 18 months from now, what are you most excited about?
Madison Feehan: We're getting ready for product launch. So, we're launching our standard Aerys printing system, our second-generation printer at NASA Marshall Space Flight Center later this summer. So, that is the big and exciting thing. After that, we're going on a bit of a roadshow with it. So, we're going up to the Arctic to do testing inside an asteroid crater where a small team of research scientists are working to train and become astronauts. So, remember I referenced door hinges in the Arctic? That's those guys.
Jake Aaron Villarreal: Wow.
Madison Feehan: We'll go 3D print them some door hinges and whatever other things that astronauts might need up there to keep safe in their habitats. We're going to go out to some remote communities, also in northern Canada while we're at it in some mining sites and start building out trusses and beams and housing and roadways. And then we're going to take it down south. Um, there's places in South America and beyond that are interested in testing with our product, some of the customers that we have in our pipeline that have been waiting, and then using that as a catalyst to further our product expansion, get more systems out to users, figure out what we could do better if there's any improvements to be made on the actual hardware. Improvise, adapt, overcome, and reiterate is the short answer to a very long rollout plan.
Jake Aaron Villarreal: I love it. I also like the fact that not only are you building a company that's global, but you also get to travel as well for the business. And you know, I mean, I've been to 50 countries and that was all my own. It was, you know, a time to really learn and grow as a person, but it wasn't building a company. But to be able to do the two together, what an amazing experience. I mean, and what an amazing culture, if you have people on board that that's part of the value proposition for them as well. They're part of a team that is going to go global and you might be in different parts of the world to help. I mean just little ways to message what you do I think could go a long way.
So on that topic, I always like to leave a little space at the end of the show for anybody that is hiring or growing or building. Might not be today. It could be in a year, it could be six months. It could be farther out, but what are the type of people that you like? What are, what type of culture are you building and what type of roles do you see that will be opening up in the future as you continue to build and grow?
Madison Feehan: I always say culture first, skills second. So people that are active communicators, go-getters, willing to dive into new things. Those are the kind of people that we want to build a team out of at Space Copy. As for hard skills, uh, we actually have a careers page on our website, spacecopy.com, that talks about some of the open areas that we want. Right now, a forward focus into 2026 and 2027 is going to be folks that do integration engineering, autonomous robotics, and programming, and also material science. So, those kind of core techy-focused job opportunities is something that you'll probably be seeing from us launching soon. So, keep an eye on that. Definitely follow us online. And then I think kind of as we focus greater into the future, uh, bringing on a chief of staff later this year and a couple other just communicative roles that help us when it's getting out to customers and generating leads and fundraising and everything in between is going to be a secondary but yet a priority focus of us as we grow.
Jake Aaron Villarreal: That's great to hear. Well, I'm excited to see where things head in the future for Space Copy. And finally, just want to ask one last question.
